Zellige tiles are inspired by the antique Moroccan art of tile handcrafting using natural clay from the region of Fez. The clays mixed with water were molded by hand, dried under the sun, and fired in the kiln. Then the raw tile biscuit was coated with a glaze of different colors (originally, only blue, yellow, and green), and fired again. Finally, the resulting glazed tile was cut into small pieces further used to compose myriads of the Oriental style geometric patterns.
No wonder that the handcrafted zellige tiles are characterized by the strong variation of color, translucency, and depth of the gloss enamel applied. The surface of every tile is non-homogeneous and irregular.
